ABOUT LINDA
“My paintings are so connected to me that I don’t know where I end and the paintings begin. I paint everything: my past, my current self exactly where I am, the future. I paint something and then it happens in my life. I paint people and then I meet them.”
Detroit artist Linda Ward's paintings are honest, instinctually visceral and capture the essence of fleeting life-moments - how it is feels rather than how it is objectively perceived. Her paintings are a continual reminder to give power to one’s intuition and live curiously in every moment.
In this series, Ward set a “one and done” rule: finish a painting and then move to the next. There’s no re-work, only moving forward. And of course, only painted portraits. These parameters made the creativity flow because many left-brained decisions were made in advance. There was a lot of experimentation, new life and clarity on a difficult question: understanding when a painting is done.
Ward received a BA in art from Western Michigan University. Her work has been shown in North America and is in collections all across the world.
